As an industry vet, there are two reasons we are seeing consolidation. 1) The cost structure and allocations at larger companies are not sustainable. There are too many people that don’t make games (cost money/v make money). At both Activision and EA marketing teams were heavily affected. 2) Aquisition costs are out of control, forcing dev teams to adopt more aggressive monetization mechanics, or accept razor thin margins.
Unions will just exacerbate the financial squeeze.
The video game industry has made a number of mistakes in their monetization strategies. People want to play fun engaging games without pay dlc, microtransactions, and loot boxes. Consumers also dont need all these editions. Standard,Deluxe Gold,Steelbook, and more. Can we create a little more confusion and ill will amongst gamers? Lets also put an end to all of these subscriptions. When I play a game, I play a standard edition. I don’t buy anything else. When the games been completed I move on to another game or another hobby. This is how video games were when I was growing up. We should all shun these new practices. We owe no loyalty to any business. As a nation we have written so many letters to the FTC that they have started an investigation. The FTC is going to look into anti-consumer products and marketing. Criminal charges, such as those being levied by Belgium against EA, could happen in the United States.
